Members of the Southeast Rock Camp, held June 20-24 through Rozwick Giles Music, learn to rock out.

Rozwick Giles Music organized their first Southeast Rock Camp for kids earlier this month, and intial reports indicate the experiment turned out to be a resounding success. The four-day camp, attended by 16 kids, culminated in a live performance Friday night at the Juneau Christian Center.

“The parents were all hooting and hollering,” said Keith Giles of Rozwick Giles. “It was really terrific.”

Instructor Paul McDermott, who led classes in drums and vocals throughout the week, said the camp started out a bit rocky but quickly smoothed out as the kids got into it.

“They were just amazing,” he said. “After they found out they could play as a band, they didn’t want to quit.”

Other instructors included Kevin Hendrickson, who led classes in guitar and bass.

Giles said he hopes to offer another music camp for local kids as soon as he can, possibly even later this summer if there’s enough interest.
