Warrant issued for Haines man wanted for ferry assault

A magistrate issued a $5,000 arrest warrant for a Haines man wanted in connection to an assault on a Juneau-bound ferry.

The warrant was issued after Easton Craig Hagwood, 21, failed to show up at his arraignment Thursday in Juneau court.

Hagwood is facing a felony assault charge for the November incident aboard the M/V Columbia as it was traveling from Haines to Juneau. The Columbia is a ferry in the Alaska Marine Highway System.

Not guilty plea in computer crime case

A Juneau man accused of a felony computer crime is scheduled to go to trial in April for allegedly placing a keylogger on a woman’s computer without her knowledge.

Timothy Ryan Johnson, 27, made his first court appearance on Tuesday for his arraignment in Juneau Superior Court before Judge Louis Menendez.

Johnson entered a not plea through his defense attorney Julie Willoughby. A three-day trial is scheduled to begin April 8.

Longtime public defender remembered

Members of the legal community, friends and family turned out Tuesday to remember a longtime public defender in Juneau who died last week.

Robert Francis Meachum died Jan. 1 after suffering a heart attack and stroke. He was 57.

Retiring Alaska Supreme Court Justice Walter L. Carpeneti said during Tuesday’s Celebration of Life Service at Northern Light United Church that he will remember Meachum for his remarkable objectivity, quiet dignity and mighty sense of right and wrong. Meachum was the first person Carpeneti and his then-law partner ever hired at their firm.

Alleged drug dealer gets three months in jail, three years probation

A Juneau man was sentenced Monday to serve 27 months with 24 months suspended for a felony drug charge.

Juneau Superior Court Judge Louis Menendez imposed the sentence for James R. Hanson, 42, after accepting a plea deal reached with prosecutors. The deal requires Hanson to be on probation for three years.

Hanson was originally charged in August with one count of second-degree drug misconduct for allegedly possessing heroin with intent to deliver.

Sentencing hearing for John Marvin Jr. rescheduled

The sentencing hearing for a man convicted of murdering two Hoonah police officers in 2010 has been pushed back to April.

Originally set for February, Sitka Judge David George rescheduled the sentencing hearing for April 5 after realizing a written order for a pre-sentence report was never given, although a verbal order was.

A jury convicted John Nick Marvin Jr., 47, in November on two counts of first-degree murder for shooting and killing two Hoonah police officers in August 2010.

Moccasin sewing class aims to revive traditional art form

Maggie Tompkins’ grandmother, a Tlingit woman from Klukwan, began wearing moccasins long ago after she stepped barefoot on a frog.

The moccasins were adorned with bead work that now sits inside Tompkins’ moccasin-making kit, almost ready to adorn a new pair.

“I’m recycling,” Tompkins said, as she began hand-sewing her own pair of moccasins. “I don’t know how to do bead work.”

Man pleads not guilty to strangling girlfriend in December attack

A 29-year-old man is facing four felony assault charges for allegedly hurting his girlfriend by strangling her last month.

Jesse H. Boone pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment in Juneau Superior Court on Christmas Eve.

The girlfriend escaped the Dec. 5 attack by running to a neighbor’s house and having the neighbor call 911, according to an affidavit filed by prosecutors.

The affidavit says police apprehended Boone, and he is currently being held at Lemon Creek Correctional Center in lieu of $15,000 bond.

Longtime Public Defender Meachum dies

A prominent criminal defense attorney, who served the Alaska Public Defender Agency in Juneau for 26 years, has died.

Robert Francis Meachum died Tuesday from a combination of a heart attack and stroke, according to family members. He was 57.

Meachum worked as an assistant public defender in Juneau from 1986 until last January, when he transferred to the Dillingham office.

Originally from Michigan, Meachum came to Alaska as a second-year law student in 1979 for an internship at the public defender’s office in Anchorage.

Officials investigate death of two Tundra Swans

Wildlife officials are investigating the death of two Tundra Swans that were found in the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge in Juneau on New Year’s Eve.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers initially thought the pair of migratory birds had been shot — either intentionally or accidentally — about two to three days prior to being found along the Mendenhall River in the refuge.

But no bullet wounds have been found yet as the carcasses are still partially frozen, and an X-ray must be conducted to determine whether they were shot, according to Alaska Wildlife Trooper Aaron Frenzel.

Man gets felony charges for monitoring girlfriend's computer

A man who suspected his then-girlfriend of cheating has been charged with a felony computer crime for allegedly accessing her computer without permission to confirm his suspicions, according to court documents.

Timothy Ryan Johnson, 27, was indicted by a Juneau grand jury late last month after the woman discovered a “keylogger” on her computer that allegedly allowed Johnson to view private emails and pictures, including nude photographs. Keyloggers silently monitor and record key strokes pressed on a keyboard, unbeknownst to the computer user.
