Juneau police officers investigate the scene of an accident involving a car and motorcycle at the intersection of Egan Drive and 12th Street Tuesday. The motorcyclist was killed at the scene.

A motorcyclist died after crashing into a car on Egan Drive and West 12th Street at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The wreckage seen from the street indicated that the 2001 red and black Honda motorcycle was traveling on Egan Drive outbound and collided with a 2001 Subaru Outback that was turning left onto West 12th Street from Egan Drive inbound. Police confirmed that in a release Tuesday night.

Lt. David Campbell said in the release that a witness reported the motorcycle slowed down temporarily, but then sped up suddenly to try to pass the Subaru. Instead, the motorcyclist struck the Subaru’s front passenger side fender and was ejected from his bike, the release states. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

Police identified him as 27-year-old Larry Brandon Blatnick Jr. Next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the Subaru, whom police identified as 41-year-old Laura Hosey, was OK, according to her mother and sister, who were at the scene. Medics evaluated her on site and determined she didn’t need to go to the hospital, although she was shaken up, they said.

Police said Hosey did not display any signs of intoxication.

Responding police officers covered up the body lying on the sidewalk with teal and grey blankets and stood guard over him. A detective later spray-painted an outline of his form and took pictures for evidence.

Motorists driving past the accident craned their neck to see what was left of the motorcycle. An upside-down sneaker lay in the road, a red helmet on the grass near the sidewalk.

The left turn signal of the Subaru was still blinking. The front passenger door and the right portion of the front bumper was bashed in.

Police comforted a woman in white tank top and denim skirt who began crying hysterically when she frantically dashed to the scene from her van. She collapsed onto the pavement in tears, and a police officer crouched next to her and spoke with her.

A younger woman standing beside her later identified her as the girlfriend of the motorcyclist.

Immediately after the crash, a small group of people watched the aftermath from across the street at Harris Harbor.

Two tourists from Canada on the Celebrity Millennium cruise line were among those in the crowd, and said they were in the area when they heard a ‘boom’ and turned around to see what happened.

They watched as two men from a white Prindles Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning Services van jumped into action and ran towards the accident that happened right in front of them.

“They tried to help him,” Ming Zhang, 50, said. “The ambulance came fast, maybe three to five minutes,” she added.

Police set up a perimeter around the wreckage with orange flares and yellow police tape, and redirected traffic around the accident. Traffic was shut between West 10th Street and Highland Drive down for about 3 1/2 hours.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Agree, Tragic

I agree with both of you. Just yesterday there was a motorcyclist weaving in and out of traffic when traffic was already moving at 65 mph on egan, and everyone was driving a little too close. There have been alot of motorcycle fatalities recently within the state. Please those of you that ride, ride cautiously. Those of you who don't ride, please be aware that motorcycles are on the road too. The family and friends will be in my prayers as well.

Good grief.

Was the second picture with the shoe laying on the highway really necessary? Have some consideration for the family JE. Probably not what they need to see while they are already grieving and upset.

Picture of the Shoe

Please take off the picture of the shoe. I couldn't imagine seeing my loved one's shoe on the front page, especially at a time such as this. You could cause someone to go into cardiac arrest or worse!

Good photo journalism

Although the photograph of the shoe may offend, it tells the whole story. And that's excellent photo journalism.

Excellent photo journalism or

Excellent photo journalism or not, it is not a part of the story that needs to be told. It is ill-advised and inappropriate, especially within hours of the wreck occurring.

You might as well post a picture of one of the rider's body parts laying in the road.

Sincere condolences to the rider's family and friends.

Did it make you think?

Then the picture of the shoe is entirely appropriate regardless of your reaction to it. This is *exactly* the type of picture I wish I could show to new riders to remind them of the dangers on the road and the consequences of being unprepared. It's no different then the wrecked car that they display to new drivers, or pictures of accidents in Drivers Ed class.

Is it raw? Yes. Does it hurt? You bet it does.

Does it make the point?

Definitely.

So Sad

Judging by the type of bike, it was probably a younger guy. We all see them on Egan, on occasion and usually a nice day, going way to fast, and hope they get sense before they die. Tragic loss for Mom, Dad, siblings, friends. One can't help to feel for them even when you don't know them.

Lots of victims here

Obviously Mr. Blatnick. And also his girlfriend. And his family and friends.

And let's not forget Ms. Hosey. She'll re-live those moments for the rest of her life.

People make mistakes on the road. Happens every day. But when there's a motorcycle involved, the consequences quickly reach tragic levels for all involved.

terrible news

I'm a defensive driver when I'm on my motorcycle or driving my truck. Drivers in this town are not very attentive and unfortunately for the most part, JPD doesn't enforce traffic violations, so people get comfortable running red lights, turning in front of others, etc. etc. etc. Forget the upcoming impaired driver patrols and start enforcing traffic violations. I could write traffic tickets every time I venture out on the road. My condelences for the families involved.

This mess?

You must be kidding me! This was a tragedy and for anyone to comment on a delay in their commute is beyond heartless. I sat at my home on Glacier Ave and watched traffic backed up all day. Not once did my thoughts go anywhere but to the tragic loss of that young mans life. This accident surely will affect all involved for years to come. I can't imagine what the familys are going through as it brought tears to the eyes of those who witnessed the accident. Have some compassion will you and please do not post rude hurtful comments!

left turn

Did I miss something or did the writer say the subaru made a left turn on to 12th. That would mean she had to cross oncoming traffic, the biker, to get to 12th. Just thinking here... It would appear from the story that she may have cut him off. If that's the case...

Just thinking here...

Yup Justice

That's how I read it. Not sure about the part with the motorcycle slowing down then speeding up. That may be a significant factor.

But like I said above, regardless who made the mistake, the results quickly become tragic with a motorcycle. Had he been in a car, it likely would have been fender bender, with a couple totaled cars. Perhaps some injuries.

Even with headlights on, motorcycles are harder to see than cars. Drivers in this town aren't very used to driving on the road with cycles, especially this summer...

Car in front of me -

Car in front of me - #@$%^&
Can I stop in time – No!!!!
Can I go left – No, oncoming traffic means head-on collision.
Can I go right – Maybe, IF I speed up.
We do not yet know all the factors involved; speeding, alcohol, texting, cell phone use, environmental, stupidity.
I’ve read the preceding comments and note that some folks are automatically faulting the motorcyclist. In response, I want to say that a drivers’ personality will be the same whether they are on 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 ,~ wheels. The fact that this person was on a motorcycle does not automatically equate to bad riding habits.
Bad driving habits can involve so many factors; distracted driving (texting, eating, nail polishing, cell phone use, etc), always driving in the left lane, falsely believing that your speedometer is accurate, and not accelerating to blend with traffic to name a few of my pet peeves.
Bottom line; if you’re on the road, the drivers’ seat is NOT the sofa in your house. Being alert, being aware, and knowing what is going on around you on the road is the responsibility of every vehicle operator.
My thoughts and prayers are for the family and friends of this rider.

Watch For Motorcycles

Sounds like the Subaru obviously didn't see the biker and pulled out right in front of him. Worst nightmare for anyone on a bike and unfortunately not an uncommon occurrence.

Motorcycles are hard to see. Don't forget how fast things can go wrong when you're behind the wheel.

We Need All The Facts

When I was a child my mother was turning left and didn't see the motorcycle coming at her. She wasn't hurt, but he died. And even though he was more than twice the legal limit of intoxication and was speeding, she was sued for wrongful death by his parents. It is too soon to come to conclusions as to who is in the wrong. Please don't judge anyone until the police have done their job. My prayers are with everyone affected by this accident.

for thier loss...

I was in the vicinity today when I heard the sirens, although, did not see the accident occur. I came home to read that a tradegy had struck, that my family and I know well. My brother was killed in a motorcycle accident much like this one six years ago, his wife and children were just a few car lengths behind him when he was struck. They were able to kiss him goodbye, but he didn't arrive at the hospital to live. The driver was a woman un-intoxicated, and the accident, truly accidental. A couple years ago, I decided to write to the driver...I had never felt angry, was just swallowed up in my own pain and then life. I recieved the most heart wrenching letter back... this woman had suffered for years, she was a mother, a grandmother, a wife, a friend. That moment six years ago forever changed her life, and she feels the guilt of years worth pain in understanding she had taken from this earth a father, husband, brother. She is now dying of cancer...I wish I had written her sooner, maybe I could have given her some peace and rest. No one knew they would wake up that day and face such a challenge...not her, not our family. But the blessings that came from not being angry, but looking for healing have helped our family so much, and I have come to pray daily for a woman who was just trying to manuever an intersection...I hope you all will be kind to all parties involved, whatever thier legal fault may or may not have been, let the officials take care of that, and help the hurting to take care of thier hearts and homes. They will need it, this is a trauma that runs deep, and we know no one meant for this to happen. We have held an impromptu memorial for the first victim, lets not forget his family and loved ones, or the second victim, who will live to replay that moment for a long time. She will need peace and forgiveness, and hope. Please let us not cause them anymore suffering. How many of us had just passed through that intersection, how much we can be grateful for. Let's keep the hope moving.

Tragic, yet worried

I am very, very sorry to read of this tragedy and to know that lives are forever changed from this moment in time.

I also know in the past three days there have been five different motorcyclists on Egan and Glacier Highway that have made me incredibly nervous as they were weaving in between cars, crossing double yellow lines, speeding and even passing on the right (over the white line) at about 75 mph. I was just talking to my family about it last night because I was worried for the safety of my own child in the car with me when they were near my vehicle - and these were separate incidents. I have to say I was not surprised when I heard of the accident.

Where is law enforcement on these gorgeous, sunny days when many people are out and about?

The newspapers seem to love

The newspapers seem to love the controversial pics. I lost a friend in high school (Graduation party) He was drunk, got in a fight with his girlfriend, Jumped on his suped up motorcycle and plowed into the back of a semi going over 100mph. Front page of the paper was a pic of his helmet in a pool of blood. They claimed it was supposed to teach us something as well. Just plain tacky! It should be removed!

Once again an idiot! This has absolutely nothing to do with your desire for a 2nd crossing! A life has been lost, many have been affected, and you are thinking your selfish politics and wants. You are ridiculously unsympathetic.
