The Coast Guard helped rescue five hikers stranded on a mountainside in Southeast Thursday.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Sitka located the group more than 4,500 feet up Mount Bassie near Sitka, the Coast Guard said in a release.
The release stated the helicopter rescue crew arrived on scene at about 1:45 where they found them on a ridge in a location where a hoist rescue was not possible. The crew, however, was able to talk with the hikers via radio and direct them to another area where the rescue could be conducted safely.
As the hikers changed locations, the helicopter returned to Sitka to refuel then returned to the mountain.
The release said all five were safely hoisted up from the ridge and taken to Sitka by 3:30 p.m.
Alaska State Troopers coordinated the effort, and also had Sitka Mountain Rescue volunteers ready to conduct a ground rescue if the hoist wasn’t possible.
