Aiding Women in Abuse & Rape Emergencies (AWARE), Inc. is celebrating the completion of the Spring 2013 Girls on the Run season in Juneau with "A Color-Full 5K Run." The mission of the Girls on the Run program is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. More than 70 3rd-8th grade girls from Gastineau Elementary, Harborview Elementary, Mendenhall River Elementary, Riverbend Elementary, and Floyd Dryden Middle School have been participating in the 12 week curriculum, which ends with all participants walking or running a 5K at 10 a.m. on May 11 at Twin Lakes. The process of setting the goal of completing a 5K, working towards this goal, and then completing this goal alongside their teammates, family and friends is very empowering to these young girls. The 5K is a celebratory event with pre-run festivities including face and hair painting, poster making, music, cheering and more.

LEGOs themselves have matured to encompass much more than the simple, interlocking pieces in most children's toy chests, and it is the current generation of electronically operated LEGO robotics that has become a rapidly growing educational, recreational and competitive craze among students throughout Alaska.
