The Hoonah Alumni Gym transformed into a lively bowling alley March 30 for Big Brother Big Sisters' 9th Annual Bowl for Kids' Sake. With three 1½ hour sessions, 13 teams, record number of volunteers, four Turkeys (3 strikes in a row), record fun and funds raised, we had a strikingly successful day. Thank you, Hoonah, for your support of our one-to-one mentoring program. It changes lives, helps improve our school and community, and ensures a brighter future for our youth!

Girls on the Run 5K

Aiding Women in Abuse & Rape Emergencies (AWARE), Inc. is celebrating the completion of the Spring 2013 Girls on the Run season in Juneau with "A Color-Full 5K Run." The mission of the Girls on the Run program is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. More than 70 3rd-8th grade girls from Gastineau Elementary, Harborview Elementary, Mendenhall River Elementary, Riverbend Elementary, and Floyd Dryden Middle School have been participating in the 12 week curriculum, which ends with all participants walking or running a 5K at 10 a.m. on May 11 at Twin Lakes. The process of setting the goal of completing a 5K, working towards this goal, and then completing this goal alongside their teammates, family and friends is very empowering to these young girls. The 5K is a celebratory event with pre-run festivities including face and hair painting, poster making, music, cheering and more.

2013 SE Alaska Chinook salmon harvest quota

Under provisions of the Pacific Salmon Treaty, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) announces that the preseason Chinook salmon all-gear harvest quota for Southeast Alaska in 2013 is 176,000 fish. This year's quota is 90,000 fish lower than the 2012 allowable preseason Chinook all-gear harvest level of 266,800.

LEGO League pulls in adults for challenge

For decades, LEGOs have inspired creative impulses in people of all ages. They occupy children for hours at a time while providing imaginative outlets for the inner child in most adults. LEGOs themselves have matured to encompass much more than the simple, interlocking pieces in most children's toy chests, and it is the current generation of electronically operated LEGO robotics that has become a rapidly growing educational, recreational and competitive craze among students throughout Alaska. For the fourth year in a row, JEDC gives adults a shot at the fun.
