April’s Coffee & Collections highlights Juneau’s musical history

This month’s Coffee & Collections presentation will feature Mary Watson, who will discuss “Music in Juneau from the 1900s through the Alaska Music Trail.” The lecture begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 2.

Watson became fascinated with the number and quality of musicians who visited and lived in Juneau in the early 1900s. While conducting research, she also learned about the devastating effect movies with soundtracks had on musicians, and the role of World War II in our music history.

Watson’s presentation will also cover the Alaska Music Trail, a touring concert series that began at the suggestion of Russian pianist Maxim Schapiro in the 1940s and spanned more than 20 years.

This free presentation will be held at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, located at the corner of 4th and Main Streets. Coffee for this series is provided by Heritage Coffee Company.
