Florence Sheakley will be the featured artist in today’s Art of Place Lecture at the Univeristy of Alaska Southeast. Sheakley, daughter of famed beadworker Emma Marks, will offer a presentation on beading and button-blanket making from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., in the Glacier View Room. Attendees are welcome to bring their lunch to the lecture.
The Art of Place lecture series, created by UAS professor and local author Ernestine Hayes, is designed to be informal, and to encourage conversation between renowned local Native artists and students, as well as other members of the public. Featured speakers thus far in the series have been weavers Della Cheney and Clarissa Rizal, and carvers Ed Kunz and Doug Chilton.
The final Art of Place lecture will take place on April 21 and feature Helen Watkins, who will talk about the art of gathering and preserving local food. The April 21 event will feature a potluck, and the public is invited to join.
