New photo collection available at Alaska Digial Archives

A new photo collection is now viewable online through Alaska’s digital archive system. Approximately 500 color transparencies, glass slides, 35-mm negatives and 120-format black-and-white negatives from the Averill and June Thayer photograph collection can be accessed through Digital Archives at,18493.

The photos portray scenery, aircraft, fish camps, trading posts, boats, walrus hunting, grave sites, village scenes and indoor scenes taken in the Arctic, Kenai Peninsula, Kuskokwim and lower Yukon rivers, Saint Lawrence Island and other cities, towns, and villages in Alaska.

Averill Thayer had a distinguished career in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and was the first manager of the Arctic National Wildlife Range. His slides reflect a piece of the history of the territory and state from the 1950s on up to 1986.
