Registration for Poetry Out Loud, a national recitation contest, is currently being accepted through the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council through Dec. 1. Poetry Out Loud, organized by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation in partnership with the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council, encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. During fall and winter 2011-2012, schools participate in classroom and schoolwide contests, advancing to a state competition on March 27, 2012. State champions will advance to the National Finals, to take place on May 14-15, 2012, in Washington, D.C.
The program takes one to three weeks of classroom time and may be incorporated with existing poetry units. The winners and runners-up at the state and national levels win cash prizes. The registration form and information on the Alaska competition can be found at jahc.org/arts-education/poetry-out-loud/ or by calling JAHC at 586-ARTS (2787).
