Deadline to register for Poetry Out Loud Dec. 1

The deadline for high schools to register for Poetry Out Loud, a national recitation contest, is Dec. 1. The contest, offered through The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation in partnership with the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council, provides an opportunity for high schools to introduce their students to poetry.

The program takes one to three weeks of classroom time and may be incorporated with existing poetry units. Schools sign up during the fall semester and have a school-wide competition by January. Regional competitions are held by Feb. 24. The state final will be March, 27, 2012. The winners and runners-up at the state and national levels win cash prizes.

Last year’s state champion was Lakeidra Chavis from Lathorp High School, Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. More than 365,000 students from 2,255 high schools took part in last year’s Poetry Out Loud program.

The registration form and information on the Alaska competition can be found at or by calling the JAHC at 586-ARTS (2787). For more about this event, visit
