JDHS grad Abella to return to Carnegie Hall

Beatrice Abella, left, of Juneau, heads to New York later this month to perform in the American Protégé International Music Talent Competition's Winners Concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. At right is fellow performer Mandee Light.

Beatriz Abella, of Juneau, achieved a life-long dream this past April when she was given the opportunity to perform at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Abella sang at the hall after receiving the Grand Winner prize in the National Young Musicians Showcase Competition’s Winners Recital.

Now, a mere seven months later, she’s headed back to Carnegie for another performance.

Abella, a student at Southern Oregon University, will be singing with fellow music student, Mandee Light, of Medford Ore in the American Protege International Music Talent Competition. The women will travel to New York to perform in the competition’s First Prize Winners Concert, where they will sing a piece from the opera, “Hansel and Gretel,” composed by Engelbert Humperdinck.

Abella, a mezzo-soprano and Light, a soprano, are students of Ellie Murray. They performed under the name Duo SOU.

Abella and Light will perform Dec. 18 at 1:30 p.m. in the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Abella is a 2008 Juneau-Douglas High School graduate. She began performing with the Juneau Children’s Peace Choir when she was 6, and later performed with the Alaska Youth Choir and the Juneau Student Symphony, as well as the JDHS orchestra and music departments.
