Canvas Community Art Studio December classes

Pop-up Cards with Sherri McDonald: Thursdays, Dec 1-15, 6:30-9 p.m. (3 weeks). Cut, fold and glue your own holiday cards that pop-up, flip and spring. $25/class or $60/three weeks (materials included).

Pie Plates with Louise Kuntz-Tadda: Sundays, Dec 4 and 11, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (2 weeks). Create a functional work of art (or two) in this 2-week pottery class. $75 (materials included).

Sun Catchers & Ornaments with Joel Abbott: Sundays, Dec 4-18, 6-9 p.m. (3 weeks). Learn the fundamentals of stained glass technique if you haven’t explored this medium before, or practice your skills if you already have some experience. $150 (materials included).

Capoeira: Mondays, Dec 5 and 19, 6:30-8 p.m. Capoeira is a martial art from Brazil which combines song, dance, and fight. Wear comfortable clothes. Shoes optional. Beginners accepted. Suggested donation $5 (donations benefit the Canvas).

Stone Setting with Rowan Law: Mondays, Dec 5-19, 6-9 p.m. (3 weeks). This jewelry making class is for intermediate students who have experience with silver and base metals, and know the basics of soldering, sawing, filing, texture and riveting. $175 (materials included).

Mbira with Sarah Newsham: Thursdays, Dec 8-29, 6-7:30 p.m. (4 weeks). The Mbira is a hand held instrument, played in many cultures throughout the world. $45.

Fiber Jewelry with Amy O’Neill Houck: Monday, Dec 12, 6:30-9 p.m. Fiber artist Amy O’Neill Houck will share techniques for creating a crocheted beaded necklace or earrings. New and experienced crocheters welcome. $30 (materials included).

Scrappy Books with Kate Laster and Sherri McDonald: Tuesday, Dec 27- Friday, Dec 30, 10 a.m.-noon (4 days). Comics, poetry, paper-making, book construction and creation come together with teaching artists Kate Laster and Sherri McDonald in this four-day class for kids over the winter break. $100 (materials included).

Special Events:

“Painting with the Masters” curated by Chris Taylor: First Friday Reception, December 2, 4:30-7:30 p.m. Canvas artists participating in the REACH Day Habilitation Program will exhibit paintings inspired by classic works from history throughout the month of December. Show will be up in the gallery all month.

Woosh Kinaadeiyí Poetry Slam and Open Mic with NaMee & Na Haan: Friday, Dec 16, 6:30-9 p.m. Poets and performers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Sign up at 6 p.m.. The Open Mic (at 6:30 p.m.) is open to any type of performance. The Poetry Slam (at 7:15 p.m.) is a friendly competition, with the winner taking home $25 cash. Featuring DJ Manu on the turntables. $5 suggested donation.

Unfinished Objects (UFOs): Sunday, Dec 11, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Participants can work on unfinished paintings or drawings with teaching artist Chris Taylor. Call to reserve a spot. Pay as you see fit.
