Juneau Bach Society to perform “infinity Cantatas” this weekend

The concert will feature the cantatas “O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort” (“O Eternity, You Word of Thunder”) and “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” (“A Mighty Fortress is our God”). The former was written by Bach in 1723, and the latter is based on Martin Luther’s 16th century hymn by the same name.

Featured singers and musicians include Kathleen Wayne, Patricia Hull, Jay Query, Philippe Damerval, Steve Tada, Jetta Whittaker, Aaron Abella and Emily Weaver, Bruce Simonson will lead the chorus and orchestra.

Tickets are $10 and $15 and are available at the door, or in advance at Hearthside Books and the JAHC.

The Juneau Bach Society, founded in 1988, offers local singers and musicians a chance to perform choral and orchestral music from the early Baroque through Romantic periods, particularly works by Johann Sebastian Bach. The group frequently collaborates with other local organizations, such as the Alaska Youth Choir, the Juneau Symphony, Juneau Lyric Opera, Opera-to-Go, and music groups from Juneau Douglas school district, as well as “unaffiliated” musicians and ad hoc ensembles from the community.

On Dec. 17 and 18, the Bach Society will join with choirs from the Alaska Youth Choir, Flyod Dryden Middle School, Juneau Douglas High School and Thunder Mountain High School in a performance of excerpts from Handel’s Messiah.
