Simpson establishes new local theater company

Juneau youth theater director Cinnamon Simpson has established a new local theater company with a focus on family participation. Theater at Latitude 58 will stage its first production – a one-act musical titled “Sunshine” – in early March.

Simpson has been directing musical and dramatic productions for youth since 2008 when she co-directed the musical “Grease” for Northern Lights Junior Theatre. She has also directed “The Sound of Music,” “Cinderella,” several dramatic plays and, most recently, “Peter Pan.”

“Juneau has a rich tradition in theater for adults and theater for children,” Simpson said in a press release. “My vision for Latitude 58 is to fill a niche by providing good opportunities for all-inclusive family theater.”

Simpson was drawn to the script of “Sunshine” because of its appeal to all ages.

“There are parts for younger actors as well as adults with a wide variety of talents. I love the script for that reason and for its message, which is that we all need each other to thrive,” Simpson said.

Simpson has performed in musical productions at Juneau-Douglas High School and Juneau-Douglas Little Theater and eventually she was cast in a role at Northern Lights Junior Theatre, founded by J. Althea. Simpson credits J. Althea as her mentor, and it was through her that she began working behind the stage, as production manager, then as stage manager before moving forward to co-direct and then direct.

Theater at Latitude 58’s debut production will be performed at the Sun Room, located above Juneau Urgent and Family Care.
