Eriksen to be featured artist at Tuesday's One Night Stand

Spoken word artist Christy Namee Eriksen will be featured at the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council’s final “One Night Stand” presentation Tuesday, Jan. 31. The series, which has been running most Tuesdays in January, highlights artists who received individual artist grants in 2011. Previous speakers included cartoonist TOE and weaver Della Cheney.

Eriksen, well-known in town for her Haiku stand and for the monthly poetry slam she organizes with Na Haan, as well as for her work in local schools, said she plans to perform some poems and to talk about the intersection of art, community and social change. She’ll also discuss her experiences performing at the Asian Pacific Islander American Spoken Word and Poetry Summit, a national, bi-annual gathering of artists, organizers, and activists she attended last year in Minneapolis, Minn. Her attendance at the gathering was made possible through her individual artist grant.

“I’m grateful to JAHC for giving me the opportunity to keep strengthening my skills as both a spoken word artist and as a community organizer,” Eriksen said of the experience.

Eriksen will give her presentation at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center, in the gallery.
