The Juneau Strings Ensemble, a group of young musicians under the direction of Guo Hua Xia, will perform a variety of music at the Chamber Music Night on Feb. 4 at the Northern Light United Church. The performance begins at 7 p.m.
Juneau Strings Ensemble includes elementary through high-school-age musicians. They have played at many events around town, including the Alaska Folk Festival, the Governor’s mansion, the Pioneer’s Home and private parties.
Tickets will be available at the door and from ensemble members. Proceeds from the performance will help raise funds for a planned trip to China in June 2013.
Here’s what some of the kids had to say when asked about the trip.
Bailey: “I can’t wait to go to China and see how other kids live. I usually take advantage of all opportunities and this is a great one!”
Cameron: “I would like to go to China because I would like to see where Mr. Xia grew up and I want to explore another culture. I am working hard to do extra chores and help people in my neighborhood to earn money so I can go on the trip.”
Kaleah: “I can’t wait to see what the kids in China play on their violin. I am also looking foward to eating new foods in China!“
Tezah: “I have been wanting to go to China for a long time to try the food and see the sights. I am also excited to meet kids from China and to see what activities they do.”
Lisa: “I have never been to China before but I have Chinese friends here in Juneau. When I go to China I am hoping that I can make friends over there too.”
Makoa: “Going to China seems like it would be a great experience. It’s a place most people in America don’t get to go to.”
Conway: “I think it would be fun to go to China and see Beijing, the Great Wall and other landmarks; also we would be performing in a really different setting.”
Connie: “I would like to go to China because I think it would be interesting to see a culture similar to my family’s culture background. Also, delicious Chinese food ,visiting the Forbidden City and the Great Wall are the kinds of experiences I look forward to.”
