Faribanks mixed media artist Sandy Gillespie will be the featured artist and instructor during a free youth activity for third through fifth grade students at the Alaska State Museum Saturday. The workshop, titled “Art Journaling,” will offer students the opportunity to look at Gillespie’s work with her and create their own abstract multi-media piece using paint, fabric, words and letterforms to tell a story, convey an idea or capture the essence of place. It runs from 1-3 p.m.
Gillespie’s solo exhibition, “Open Book,” opens Friday at the museum and runs through March. 10. It includes a collection of paintings, mixed media pieces, handmade journals and found art.
Pre-registration for Gillespie’s workshop is required. Call the museum during normal business hours to register.
The workshop is sponsored by the Friends of the Alaska State Museum and paid for in part by the citizens of the City and Borough of Juneau through sales tax revenue.
