Poster contest for kids celebrates anniversary of Katmai eruption

Alaska third-graders have been invited to participate in a poster contest that celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the Novarupta-Katmai eruption that created the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes in Katmai National Park. The contest is part of a summer-long celebration sponsored by the Alaska Historical Society, the Alaska Volcano Observatory and Katmai National Park and Preserve.

All third grade students studying Alaska history are encouraged to submit an original painting, drawing, or paper collage reflecting the history of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes or the stories found within. Participants should include a brief explanation of their design citing inspiration and how it relates to the theme: “Novarupta: A Volcano that Made History.” Designs do not have to include the Valley itself, but should relate in some way to the eruption. Among the many ideas, you may choose to depict Katmai and Savanoski villagers escaping the eruption, the variety of colors expressed in the ash, one of the many explorers who visited the Valley, or perhaps bear prints wandering across an ashflow, abounding with returning life.

Winning posters will be displayed at the Alaska Public Lands Information Center in Anchorage throughout the summer, and will travel as an exhibit to other cultural and scientific institutions across the state.

The deadline to submit posters is April 30.
