The winners of this year’s statewide Scholastic Art & Writing Competition were recently announced by F Magazine, an independently owned arts, music and culture publication based in Anchorage.
Emma Funk of West Valley High School in Fairbanks won the national American Voices Medal, and Megan Edic of Palmer High School won the American Visions Medal.
F Magazine published the majority of this year’s winners in their most recent issue, which hit the stands Friday, April 6. This issue is also available online wwwfhideout.org for a $5 download. Winning art was also on display last month at the Out North Contemporary Art House in Anchorage,
The Scholastic Writing Competition is a statewide youth writing competition affiliated with a national organization, Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, that awards $30 million in scholarships and grants every year. The national awards competition, entering its 89th year, is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for student achievement in the visual and literary arts. Students in grades 7-12 are eligible to submit work in 28 categories of art and writing, including film and animation, video game design, sculpture, photography, fashion design, poetry, journalism, humor, dramatic script and science fiction. The contest is supported by Out North Contemporary Art House, 49 Writers and Trailer Arts Center.
F Magazine is currently taking submissions for the F’Air Words Statewide Writing Competition, open to poetry, essays, fiction and nonfiction. The postal deadline is May 1 and the digital deadline is May 15. For more information, visit fhideout.org/competition.
