National Poetry Month: Featured local poem

This week’s featured poem is by local poet Richard Stokes. Stokes has published two poetry collections, “Notes Searching for a Tune” in 2010 and “Juneau Seasons” in 2011. This poem is a recent work.

On Ketchikan’s Creek Street,

once famous for Dolly’s red light,

a grandmother and two girls,

one tow-headed with a sprinkle

of delicious freckles across her nose,

the other with hair like bronzed flame,

sit sketching on the curved boardwalk,

now jammed with trinket shops,

as tourists walk by smiling,

perhaps puzzled nothing’s for sale.
