Hand-bell concert to be presented Saturday

Celebration Ringers will present a hand-bell concert at at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, located at 10th and Glacier Streets downtown. The concert is a fundraiser for the ministries of the church, with funds going to support the jail chaplaincy program, a remodeling project to provide more space for quilting for Lutheran World Relief, and the church’s food bank.

The 11 ringers will be ringing 61 Malmark English handbells and 37 choir chimes. A variety of bell techniques will showcase the wide array of sounds that the bells can produce. Besides ringing, malleting, shaking, tolling, and martellating, the choir will be using two new techniques – the singing bell and the echo ring. The singing bell is created as if you were running a finger around the lip of a crystal goblet, but is done with a wooden dowel around the lip of the bell. The echo ring is produced by touching the lip of the bell two or three times very lightly on the padded tables.

Some of the pieces will include other instruments, such as cello, flute, voice and percussion. Local musicians Judy Mitchell and Laurie Hagelberg will perform piano solos; Mike Truax will contribute guitar and vocals; and an ensemble from the Pride Chorus will sing.

The concert is free but donations are taken to assist with the ministries of the church.
