Lecture to focus on the lasting legacy of powering Juneau's mines

Juneau mining historian David Stone will team up with Scott Willis of Alaska Electric Light and Power Company to present “Then & Now: Powering the Great Mines of Juneau” on Monday, May 21, at 7 p.m. at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center.

Stone, a leading expert on Juneau’s mining history and co-author of “Hard Rock Gold,” has partnered with the Juneau-Douglas City Museum and Hecla-Greens Creek Mining Company to offer presentations highlighting various aspects of Juneau’s mining history over the years. This year, he will be joined by Willis, AEL&P’s power generation engineer, to focus on the numerous power projects that were developed to power operations at Treadwell Complex, the Alaska-Gastineau Mine, and the Alaska-Juneau Mine. Stone and Willis will also discuss the lasting effects the power systems, some of which are still operational, have on today’s community.

Tickets will be sold at the door and are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors (65 and older) and youth (12 and under). “Then & Now: Powering the Great Mines of Juneau” is co-sponsored by Hecla-Greens Creek Mining Company and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.

The City Museum is located at 4th and Main Street and is a facility of the Juneau Parks and Recreation Department.
