A ritual-themed concert at the JACC

Posted: May 17, 2012 - 12:06am

The Juneau Wind Ensemble will offer a pay-as-you-can concert Sunday, May 20, at 3 p.m. at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center. The concert is family-friendly and features a collaboration and performance with the Floyd Dryden Middle School 8th grade band.

Featuring close to 30 of Juneau’s most accomplished wind musicians, William Todd Hunt has programmed a “Ritual” themed concert. Hunt describes how he came up with the ritual theme.

“The idea for the theme came to me from a couple of pieces that first came to mind after I was asked to conduct the concert – John Barnes Chance’s ‘Incantation and Dance,’ and an excerpt from Manuel De Falla’s ballet ‘El Amor Brujo’ called ‘Ritual Fire Dance.’ ‘Incantation and Dance’ has been a favorite of mine since my high school days, but I have never conducted it,” Hunt said. “After conducting a suite from De Falla’s ‘Three Cornered Hat’ for the Juneau Symphony a couple of years ago, I fell in love with his music – the evocative quality and the textures in particular. I started looking at pieces that either had suggestive titles or music for the program, and found loads of things that could work in the theme.”

The newest piece on the program is called “Cathedrals,” by Kathryn Salfelder. Salfelder was only 20 years old when she wrote the work, a blending of a 1597 work by Gabrieli and much newer sounds. It features two brass choirs played antiphonally. Rounding out the program is a March by Meyerbeer, a completely silly suite of movements by PDQ Bach, and “Ceremoniale” by Elliot Del Borgo.

Special guest on this concert is the Floyd Dryden 8th grade band, who will be joining the Wind Ensemble for two pieces, side by side with the adults. Floyd Dryden band teacher Mike Bucy plays trombone in the Juneau Wind Ensemble.

Formerly the Juneau Concert Band, the Juneau Wind Ensemble formed four years ago as an extension of the Juneau Marching band, providing a year-round musical outlet for wind musicians. The Juneau Wind Ensemble is an all-adult community band that performs twice a year. The Wind Ensemble gives opportunities for wind playing adults to play, as well as brings performances of neglected repertoire to Juneau.

The Juneau Volunteer Marching Band will begin soon after the Wind Ensemble concert and is open to musicians of all abilities. Check the website for more performance opportunities.
