Woosh Kinaadeiyí, hosts of the popular local poetry slam and open mic event held every third Friday around Juneau, have expanded their spoken word offerings for July. Following the July poetry slam on Friday, Woosh Kinaadeiyí has organized a 24-hour spoken word retreat on Saturday and Sunday out the road.
The Poetry Slam and Open Mic will be held at the Rookery, 111 Seward St., this Friday, July 20. As always, this event is open to writers and performers of all ages and abilities. Sign up starts at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 6:30 p.m. July’s slam will be hosted by Christy NaMee Eriksen and special guest Jacque Boucher, and feature DJ Manu on the turntables. Those who wish to participate in the slam should bring three original poems to share. The winner will take home $25 cash.
Then, beginning on Saturday, a Spoken Word Retreat will be held at the Eagle Retreat Center at SAGA, located at 24 mile, out the road. The retreat offers an opportunity for attendees to relax, write and connect with other poets. It runs from 3 p.m. Saturday through 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21-22. All are welcome. Due to a limited number of beds, reservations are required. The cost is $10 and participants should bring some food to share. Rides to the retreat center are available.
