Student filmmakers highlight Filipino history in Kodiak

Posted: July 25, 2012 - 11:02pm  |  Updated: July 28, 2012 - 11:03pm

In June, nine Kodiak students created their own short documentaries on the history of Kodiak’s largest ethnic minority, Filipinos. All nine films are now available for viewing through the Baranov Museum’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/BarMuse.

Students conducted historical research and interviews, gathered photographs, shot and edited the films, and helped the Baranov Museum to better document and interpret the history of Filipinos in Kodiak.

The nine films are: “The Many Filipino Organizations of Kodiak.” by 9th-grader Kyla Vilaroya; “Remembering the Workers” by 7th-grader Rey Jacob Roy; “Denis’ Story,” by 12th-grader Olivia Bennett; “The J-1 Visa Controversy.” by 7th-grader Marina Cummiskey; “Filipinos in the Aleutian Homes,” by 11th-grader James Guilas; “Filipinos in the Canneries,” by 10th-grader Max Mutch; “USCG Filipinos,” by 7th-grader Hunter Blair; “Education - the Filipino Experience in Kodiak,” by 10th-grader Blake James; and “Filipinos in Politics by 10th-grader Jonas Anderson.

The project was made possible through financial support from the Alaska Humanities Forum.
