Theater at Latitude 58 prepares for radio theater performances on KTOO

Local youth theater company Theater at Latitude 58 is gearing up for their Summer Radio Theater Project in collaboration with KTOO. Twenty cast members ages 6 to 14 are currently rehearsing four radio theater scripts: “Pippi Longstocking,” “The BFG,” “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and “The Hobbit,” and will soon be ready to record the shows in the KTOO studios. Some cast members will also be involved in the postproduction process led by KTOO staff.

The radio theater performances will air on KTOO at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, and at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 19. They will also available on Theater at Latitude 58’s website and the KTOO website.

Theater co-president Shelly Smith said the company is thrilled about the collaboration.

”It’s been a blast exploring this genre with our young actors,” she said in an email.

Theater at Latitude 58 is also preparing for the fall productions of their inaugural season. The first is “Once Upon a Mattress,” for young actors ages 11 to 24. Directed by Cinnamon Simpson with choreography by Janice Hurley and vocal direction by Megan Felts, this production is scheduled to be performed Nov. 15-18 at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center. Interested actors, dancers and singers should contact the theater by Wednesday, Aug. 15, to be cast.

The second fall production is “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” for young actors ages 7 to 11. This family production also includes many roles for adult actors. Directed by Cinnamon Simpson, this play will be performed during the three weekends prior to Christmas at the Juneau Urgent and Family Care Center. (Rumor has it there may be a visit by Santa.)
