Juneau Jazz & Classics will present world-renowned cellist Zuill Bailey in a unique performance featuring the complete Bach Suites for Unaccompanied Cello. The concert, to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the University of Alaska Southeast Egan Library, is a benefit for the 2013 Juneau Jazz & Classics Festival.
The Bach Cello Suites are among the best-known, and possibly greatest, musical works, of all time. Jazz & Classics Artistic/Executive Director Linda Rosenthal said to hear them performed is a rare experience.
“It takes a cellist with a prodigious technique, profound musicality and tremendous expressive powers — all of which Zuill has in abundance,” she said in a release.
Zuill Bailey’s 2010 recording of the Bach Cello Suites soared to the top spot on the classical Billboard Charts when it was released. A Washington Post reviewer wrote of the release, “In Bailey’s hands, this is music of both profundity and joy.”
Bailey & Bach is held in support of the 27th Annual Juneau Jazz & Classics festival, scheduled for May 3-18. This special benefit concert is presented with sponsorship from the Juneau Empire; 630 KJNO/Mix 106/800 KINY/1330 KXJ/Taku 105; KRNN 102.7; the University of Alaska Southeast; and the Westmark Baranof Hotel. The performance is supported by Duane Callahan in memory of Myra E. Howe.
Tickets are limited, and are $50 for general seating or $25 for students. Tickets and further information are available at www.jazzandclassics.org, at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center and at Hearthside Books.
