The Gold Town Nickelodeon will host a screening of “Beauty is Embarassing” followed by a live video Skype interview with Wayne White, the artist who is the focus on the film, on Tuesday. The film begins at 7 p.m. at the Gold Town, located in the Emporium Mall.
A designer, illustrator, painter, puppeteer, sculptor and musician, White was the main creative director of “Pee Wee’s Playhouse,” winning three Emmy awards for his work on the show. He also was the art director for the music video “Big Time” by Peter Gabriel, and designed the sets for the Smashing Pumpkins’ video “Tonight, Tonight.” More recently, he has garnered praise for his word paintings and public art pieces.
The film, “Beauty is Embarssing,” documents White’s evolution and influence as an artist over his 30-year career. Los Angeles Magazine said of the film, “This movie ought to be required viewing, not just for Oscar voters but for every aspiring artist wondering how to build a life doing what they love. Beauty is Embarrassing isn’t simply a testament to the talents of Wayne White; it’s a snapshot of the ways in which creativity and the business of daily living can be inseparably fused.”
The film will also be shown Monday, and next Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30, at the Gold Town. For more information, visit www.goldtownnick.com and beautyisembarrassing.com/the-film/wayne-white.
