Summer hours at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center ended this week. The US Forest Service center will reopen with winter hours on Friday, Sept. 28.
During winter, the center will be open with free admission Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
The Alaska Geographic bookstore, located inside the visitor center, is now closed for the winter.
Black bears are still foraging in the Steep Creek and visitor center area so people are reminded to be alert for bears, keep dogs on leashes, and not to carry food or beverages, except water, outside. Bears are likely to be denning by November but may be active well into winter.
Forest Explorers, the center’s kids’ activity corner, will start up again in October. Halloween activities are planned at the glacier for Saturday, Oct. 27.
The free Friday night Fireside Lecture programs will resume in January with cultural and natural history presentations on various topics.
