Juneau Wind Ensemble and TMHS Symphonic Band to perform Saturday

The Juneau Wind Ensemble and the Thunder Mountain High School Symphonic Band will offer a free concert (with donations accepted) on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m. at Thunder Mountain High School.

Featuring close to 30 of Juneau’s most accomplished wind musicians, conductor Michael Bucy has programmed a dance-themed concert, featuring familiar music such as “The Afternoon of a Faun” and the Habanera from the opera “Carmen.” Audience members may recognize other pieces by J.S. Bach, Benjamin Britten, and Percy Grainger. The “super-band,” made up of the Juneau Wind Ensemble and TMHS Symphonic Band members will play a rousing rendition of the Irish Reel, Molly on the Shore, and Arabian Dances.

The pairing of the Thunder Mountain High School Symphonic Band amd the Juneau Wind Ensemble shows the Wind Ensemble’s commitment to music education and gives the young and new instrumentalists an opportunity to perform with the some of the best instrumentalists in Juneau. TMHS band teacher, Brian Van Kirk, plays saxophone in the Juneau Wind Ensemble.

Formerly the Juneau Concert Band, the Juneau Wind Ensemble formed four years ago as an enhancement of the Juneau Marching band, providing a year-round musical outlet for wind musicians. The Juneau Wind Ensemble is an all-adult community band that performs twice a year. The Wind Ensemble gives opportunities for accomplished wind playing adults to play, as well as brings performances of neglected repertoire to Juneau.

The Reindeer Band will begin soon after the Wind Ensemble concert and community musicians of all ages and skill levels to are invited to participate. Check the website for more performance opportunities.
