Opera To Go's Chamber Orchestra to perform annual concert

Opera to Go will present its annual concert, conducted by William Todd Hunt, which features the resident orchestra of Opera to Go, the Amalga Chamber Orchestra, on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. at Northern Light United Church.

The program includes Mozart’s boisterous Symphony number 38, an aria from Rory Stitt’s new opera, “Bennu’s Birds” sung by Kathleen Wayne, as well as the famous Unfinished Symphony of Schubert. The featured soloist is Sally Schlichting, performing the Poem for Flute and Orchestra by Charles Griffes.

Sally Schlichting, raised in Juneau, studied classical flute at Interlochen, the University of Southern California and the University of Washington. Over the years, her playing has been influenced by flutists John Barcellona, Felix Skowronek, Mary Louise Poor, Gary Woodward, Pamela Ryker, Zart Dambourian-Eby and Amy Porter.  Since 1990, Schlichting has performed nearly continuously with the Juneau Symphony as principal flutist and is a frequent performer of solo and chamber works, many with local pianist and her aunt, Mary Watson.
Kathleen Wayne has worked with William Todd Hunt in numerous opera roles with Opera to Go and the Juneau Lyric Opera including Rosina in Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville,” Mimi in Puccini’s “La Boheme”, “Trittico,” and “Tosca.” She has also performed the title role in Bizet’s “Carmen,” and Cunegonde in Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide.” She has appeared with the Juneau Symphony, under the baton of Kyle Wylie Picket, as a featured soloist in the Poulenc Gloria, Mahler’s 4th, and the role of Micaela in Bizet’s “Carmen.” She has also performed with Opera Fairbanks with conductor Maestro Gregory Butchalter of the Metropolitan Opera.

Tickets are on sale now at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center Box Office, Hearthside Books, Rainy Retreat Books, and on the web at www.operatogo.net . General admission is $15, seniors are $13 and students are $5.
