Wearable Art applications accepted through Jan. 7

The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council’s Wearable Art Extravaganza is currently accepting registrations from artists who wish to participate. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Jan. 7.


This year’s show, scheduled for Feb. 9 and 10 at Centennial Hall, is called “Organix,” a theme that encourages artists to focus on the intersection of two ideas: organic and mechanics.

“Freeform, natural, nature, earthy, non-restricted, open, non-rigid, free, fluid, open-minded, plasmic, elastic, original… would be some of the thoughts that go through my mind when I think about how the word (Organix) makes me feel.” said Bauer/Clifton Interiors’ Jeremy Bauer in reference to the theme. Bauer/Clifton Interiors will again be designing the set for the show, and KXLL’s Andy Kline will step in as director, while retaining his role as co-host.

As with every Wearable Art show, the Organix theme is suggested and not mandatory, offered to inspire, not limit, an artist’s creations.

Wearable art is simply art designed for the body, and it can take many forms -- sculpture, painting, weaving, welding, sewing, fusing. Artists in all media may enter.

Online applications can be completed by visiting the JAHC’s website at www.jahc.org. A music CD and a photo or sketch of your piece is also due with the application on Jan. 7. The CD and photo or sketch can be dropped off at the JACC, along with a registration fee of $35. Any artist over 15 is required to pay the fee, which helps fund the cash prizes for the People’s Choice Awards, handed out the Sunday show. The fee can also be paid online.

Artists under age 14 will be grouped in a kids show within the main show. They do not have to pay an application fee, and are not eligible for the People’s Choice Award; however exceptions may be made at the discretion of the director and in agreement with the artist and their guardian, in which case the $35 fee will apply.

Artists will be asked to attend a meeting on Jan. 10, from 5-7 p.m. to discuss the theme, the process, the photograph requirements for their pieces and any questions they might have for the WA team. Show rehearsals are mandatory — see the web site for full details.

This is the 12th annual Wearable Art show — the major fundraising event for the JAHC. Proceeds from the Saturday show and silent auction support the scholarship and grant programs the council offers, and the Sunday events support the operation of the JACC.

The Annual Mayor’s Awards for the Arts will be presented at Sunday’s show; nominations are now being accepted.
