New Year's Eve activities

New Year’s Eve offers plenty of action for locals looking to get out and enjoy live music and dancing. Here’s a look at a few of the offerings.

• Barn Dance: The 23rd Annual New Year’s Eve Barn Dance will be held from 7:30-11 p.m. Monday at St. Ann’s Parish Hall at 5th and Gold Streets downtown, and will feature live music by the band “Happy to Be Here” with Jim and Martha Stey and friends. Odette Edgar will teach and call a night of contra and square dances, and no experience or partners are necessary. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for JIF and AFF members, $5 for students and seniors, and free for JV, SAGA, VISTA. For more information, call 463-3214,

• Swing in the New Year: This annual event, organized by Juneau Jazz & Classics, will feature the music of the Thunder Mountain Big Band and special guest vocalist Cassie Miller, a Los Angeles-based singer whose specialty is big band swing. Catered hors d’oeuvres, a no-host bar and a complimentary champagne toast at midnight are included in the admission price of $50. This party will be held Monday, 9 p.m. at the JACC. • Traveler Quartet: The Traveler Quartet will be playing at Zephyr restaturant from 7-10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

• Block party on the Wharf: The 2nd Annual New Year’s Eve Block Party on the Wharf begins at 9 p.m. and is a 21 and over event. Admission is $5, with money going to benefit KXLL, Excellent Radio, but a dinner receipt from the Hangar gets you in for free. The entire Wharf Mall will be blocked off for this party, which will include live music from Deering and Down in the Ballroom and Filejerks in the Hangar. A complimentary champagne toast will be offered at midnight, and pizza by the slice will be for sale at Pizzeria Roma all night long. For details, visit
