Gold Town brings 'The General' and Rumblefish back

Jack Fontanella, Erik Chadwell, and Sergei Morosan of Rumblefish. The fourth band member is Andy Ferguson.

The Gold Town Nickelodeon will host a repeat showing of Buster Keaton’s classic film “The General” with live musical accompaniment from old-time stringband Rumblefish this weekend. This event was first featured this past fall as part of the Not-so-silent Film Series, and proved so popular theater manager Collette Costa decided to schedule two repeat performances this Saturday.

One of the indications of the event’s popularity was the frequency with which it appeared in the Juneau Empire’s Bright Moments of 2012 list compiled from readers’ submissions of their favorite arts events of the year; it was listed specifically at least five times, making it the most frequently mentioned event in the article (the theater in general garnered at least seven mentions).

In the past few years, the Gold Town has expanded its local offerings, growing from art house theater to popular multi-use performance space. In addition to its line up of featured films and film series, the theater hosts live music concerts such as the KRNN Concert Series and this weekend’s Marion Call show, presentations such as the recent Skyped talk by artist Wayne White, and many other events.

“The General,” filmed in 1926, will be shown at 2 and 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the downtown theater, located in the Emporium Mall behind Heritage Coffee. Rumblefish -- Jack Fontanella, Erik Chadwell, Sergei Morosan and Andy Ferguson -- will provide the live soundtrack.
