Juneau Arts & Humanities Council offers student scholarships, individual artist grants, and oversees the re-granting of City & Borough of Juneau arts funding. Applications for these are now available on the Council web site (www.jahc.org) or at the JACC. Applications for Scholarships and Individual Artist Grants are due April 1 at 5 p.m. Applications for Major Grants (CBJ regranting) are due April 15 at 5 p.m.
Fine Arts Scholarships range from $100-$400 and may be used for:
• Tuition and travel to a performing or fine arts camp (including those outside of Alaska); private lessons; workshops; master classes; (attach details such as brochures or instructor resumes)
• Instrument rental/repair/purchase; (attach brand name and cost of equipment and/or repair)
• Creative writing and fine arts materials/supplies/equipment.
Students entering grades seven to 12 in the next school year, who have lived in Juneau for at least one year are eligible to apply.
Advanced Arts Achievement Awards are awarded for up to $1,000. Students graduating from high school, GED recipients, and students up to 25 years of age who have lived in Juneau for at least one year are eligible to apply
Scholarship applicants may apply in one of several disciplines: Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music, Technical Theater, and Visual and Graphic Arts. Students will audition or be reviewed by a panel of judges on Sunday April 22 at the JACC (dance auditions will be at the Juneau Dance Unlimited studios), and the auditions are open to the public.
Individual Artist Grants are awarded to emerging and experienced artists of exceptional talent to produce original works of art or advance their careers. Grants are for up to $750. Artists in any creative discipline may apply, including: Visual Artists: painters, sculptors, printmakers, filmmakers, craftspeople, photographers and video artists; Creative Writers: writers of poetry and prose, playwrights and screenwriters; Composers, choreographers, dancers, designers, musicians, actors and other artists not falling within an artistic discipline listed above.
This program enables artists to set aside time to create or present works of art, conduct research, purchase materials, attend workshops or seminars, generally advance their artistic careers, or cover loss of artistic materials resulting from theft, fire or other emergencies or disasters.
Applicants will present their work to a panel of adjudicators in April, at a date to be announced.
Major Grants assist organizations whose primary purpose is to provide cultural opportunities to the community of Juneau, to offer opportunities that encourage creative expression, stimulate understanding and appreciation of the arts and humanities, and to encourage community support of the arts and humanities. Local organizations that have been in existence for at least one year may apply.
Applications are adjudicated by an independent seven-member panel in late April or early May. The adjudications are open to the public. The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council is offering a work session on April 4 at 5:15 p.m. at the JACC to assist applicants in preparing their Major Grant applications.
The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council Board of Trustees reviews and approves the recommendations of each of the panels before making the awards.
