Woosh Kinaadeiyí teams up with Sound & Motion for poetry slam

For the first time, Woosh Kinaadeiyí poetry slam and open mic is coming to the University of Alaska Southeast Auke Lake campus. The event will be presented as part of the UAS Sound and Motion series at the Egan Lecture Hall, on Friday, Feb. 15. Sign-ups begin at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m.

MCs are UAS Art major Kate Laster, Class of ’13 and UAS alumni and Outstanding Humanities graduate Jacqueline Boucher, Class of ’12.  DJ Manuel Hernadez will be spinning tunes.

Here is a sample poem in progress, posted on the Woosh Kinaadeiyí Poetry Slam Facebook page by regular slam poets Daniel Kantak and Bill Merk.

Sunrise comes early;

Sunsets linger over Spring’s green fingers

Unfolding new from the heart of winter’s fist.

Sisikins and crossbeaks, finches,

Drop through holes in blue/grey sky,

Their songs spilling like marbles

Across the hardwood glaze of a newly-polished floor.

Like coming up from undersea, this feeling,

The sense of having risen to a waiting beach,

Your body stretching out the cramps of heavy sleep;

A lake of darkness draining

Exposes the bones of memory, gratitude, and lust.
