Juneau Explorers camp offered over spring break

The Juneau Douglas City Museum will once again offer a spring break camp for kids, Juneau Explorers, Monday through Friday, March 18-22, at the museum, from 12:30-4:30 p.m. The camp is geared toward children between 8 and 12 years of age.


Juneau Explorers includes art classes, field trips, local explorations, healthy snacks, fun and more. Kids can enroll for the whole week of activities or for a day at a time. The cost is $180 for the entire week, or $36/day. Cost includes all materials fees, transportation to and from activities, and a light snack.

Space is limited and pre-registration and pre-payment is required.

Here’s a look at the schedule of activities:

Monday, March 18: Art Walk & Book Making with Sarah Asper-Smith. Explore the local museums and learn about art, history, and culture. Return to the City Museum, speak and make your own book with author and illustrator Sarah Asper-Smith.

Tuesday, March 19: Taku Winds & Wire Sculptures featuring the art of Alexander Calder. Watch a brief video on artist Alexander Calder. Discuss Taku Winds and take a field trip to the beach to look for items to make a wire mobile.

Wednesday, March 20: Swimming at Dimond Pool & DIPAC Tour. Go swimming at Dimond Park Aquatic Center and discuss the history of Augustus Brown Swimming Pool. Tour DIPAC and sketch sea life.

Thursday, March 21: Gold Panning & Gold Leaf Rubbings. Explore Juneau’s mining history and gold panning for gold at Cope Park. Look at various textures and make gold leaf rubbings at the City Museum.

Friday, March 22: Rattles, Totems, Dancing and Singing. Construct rattles and paper totem poles; take a tour of totem poles in the downtown area, and sing and dance to songs.
