Alaska Juried Art Exhibition opens

The 34th annual All Alaska Juried Exhibition opens Friday, March 22, at the Alaska State Museum, with a reception hosted by the Friends of the Alaska State Museum beginning at 4:30 p.m. This exhibit, which celebrates the contributions of contemporary Alaska artists, is made up of 40 artworks by 27 different artists, culled from 479 submissions from around the state by juror Susan Cross. Juneau’s Dan Fruits is the only local artist represented, with his oil painting “Chilkat Study.”

At Friday’s opening, Anchorage artist James Behlke will present a free lecture at 6:30 p.m. Behlke was awarded the $1,000 Juror’s Choice Award for three charcoal on canvas works. The $500 recognition award was given to Klara Maisch of Fairbanks, for her silkscreen print, “Alaskan Collection,” and the $250 award was given to Asia Freeman of Homer, for “Jakalof Peak,” an oil painting.

The exhibition, which opened at the Anchorage Museum in October, will be on view in Juneau through April 23, and then travel to the Bear Gallery in Fairbanks in May.

Juror Cross is a curator at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams. She also has curated for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City, and served as a juror for the Guggenheim’s Hugo Boss Prize.

Discounted winter admission for museum visitation is $3.
