Tsimshian carver and metalsmith Abel Ryan to give artist demonstration Saturday

Tsimshian carver and metalsmith Abel Ryan will demonstrate his artistry at the Alaska State Museum on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a break at noontime for lunch. Ryan’s formline designs include masks, bowls, spoons, pipes, ladles, plaques, combs and other pieces.


Ryan belongs to the Metlakatla Indian Community, is a member of the Wolf Clan, and has been living in Juneau. He received a BA from Sheldon Jackson College in 2006, as well as an additional degree in 2009 in Native Arts Studio and Printmaking from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He apprenticed under master carver Jack Hudson of Metlakatla.
