Poetry slam, spoken word workshops and group poetry reading all coming up

Three different poetry events are scheduled for this week and next, all involving Woosh Kinaadeiyí, organizers of the monthly poetry slam in Juneau.

First up, the monthly poetry slam and open mic, to be held Friday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. this time at the Zach Gordon Youth Center. This all-ages event is open to the public; attendees are encouraged to pay as you can. Sign up to read at 6 p.m. Learn more at www.facebook.com/wooshpoetry.

Next, Zach Gordon will continue their partnership with Woosh Kinaadeiyí through a series of spoken word workshops, taught by local artist Christy NaMee Eriksen. The workshops began Monday and continue through May 21. Offered for youth ages 9-21, the workshops focus on creative writing, performance and diversity. They will be held from 5-6 p.m. on May 16, May 17, and May 21. For more information about the workshops, contact Jess Brown at 586-2635.

Also next week, Woosh Kinaadeiyí will be part of a group poetry reading, Poetry Across Generations, at the Historical Library on Tuesday, May 21, at noon. Featured poets include Alaska Writer Laureate Nora Marks Dauenhauer, former writer laureate Richard Dauenhauer and Ishmael Hope. The reading is free and open to the public. For more, contact Anastasia Tarmann at anastasia.tarmann@alaska.gov.

And that’s not all: Later this year, Woosh Kinaadeiyí will partner with Juneau Fine Arts Camp to offer spoken word workshops for 4th through 6th grade youth. The workshops will be taught over four weeks by Eriksen, Kate Laster, Jacque Boucher, Bill Merk and Mike Christenson.  Students will learn creative writing and performance, with an emphasis on individual identity, voice, and community building.

The Juneau Fine Arts Camp is now accepting registrations. The camp will run June 3-28, 2013 at Juneau Douglas High School.  Sign up for the whole month, or just a week or two. For a complete list of offerings and more information, visit www.juneaudance.org.
