Concerts in the Park, traditionally held at Marine Park on Friday evenings throughout the summer months, begins this week in a new location and with an expanded focus. The series, which showcases local performers, will be held at this season at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center -- outdoors if it’s sunny, indoors if it’s not. Along with the music and performances of the original series, this year the Juneau arts and humanities council has broadened the event’s focus to include art and food vendors, calling the whole package “Food Truck Fridays.”
Nancy DeCherney, executive director of the arts council, described the new series as “a JACC-in-a-box full of surprises, all wound up with music.”
Kari Groven, program coordinator at the JAHC, said the series will incorporate the JACC’s Sunday market of seasons past (no longer happening), and will include food, arts and crafts, face painting and other family friendly events.
You could say it’s a JACC size community day for the whole family, she said.
Food Truck Friday’s gets started at 5:30 p.m. Friday, and will feature music from the Thunder Mountain Big Band, and the Mis Ain’t Behavin’ vocal trio of Pat Belec, Scarlett Adam and Rebecca Albert.
The first Food Truck Fridays event also coincides with an opening reception for the JAHC’s First Friday exhibit, the 4th Biennial Juried Art Show. Judged by Sitka artist Nicholas Galanin, the show includes work by Timi Johnson, Carol Baker, Joy Lee, Rob Roys, Teri Robus, Christianne Carrillo, Barbara Craver, Puanani Maunu, Elizabeth Knecht, Terri Gallant, Rachael Juzeler and Patrice Helmar.
Also new this season is Music on the Fly, a weekly concert held out at the Juneau International Airport, which begins June 9. The concerts run on Sundays, June 9–Aug. 25, from 6:30–7:30 p.m., and are open to performers of acoustic, family-friendly music. Musicians will take 30 minute to one hour slots in welcoming visitors and returning Juneauites at the airport baggage claim area. To sign up, visit jahc.org.
