Alaska Summer Theatre Intensive begins June 30

Perseverance Theatre’s Alaska Summer Theatre Intensive, a nine-day training program for actors and other theater artists, will be held this year from June 30 through July 7 at the theater in Douglas.

Students will attend workshops led by visiting professional theater artists in playwriting, directing, acting, design, Viewpoints, Suzuki Method, and Fitzmaurice Voicework. Class work will vary depending on the discipline and will include lecture, written work, scene work, physical training and exercises.

Playwriting sessions will be taught by Dipika Guha. Her plays include “The Betrothed,” “Passing,” and “The Rules.” Dipika, who is from India, graduated from the MFA Playwriting Program at the Yale School of Drama where she studied with Paula Vogel.

Viewpoints and the Suzuki Method will be taught by Gian-Murray Gianino. Both are distinct methods of actor training that increase actors’ awareness of their body, voice and presence. Gianino, a member of SITI Company, has taught Suzuki and Viewpoints with the company in New York, Los Angeles and Prague. He has extensive theater experience in the US and in Europe, and has appeared on the television shows “Law and Order” and “White Collar,” among others.

Fitzmaurice Voicework will be taught by Micha Espinosa. It is an approach to voice training that can include work on breathing, resonance, speech, dialects, impromptu speaking, text, singing and voice with movement. Espinosa, an Arizona-based artist, activist, teacher, and vocal coach, has performed, lectured and taught voice around the world since 1992. She is assistant professor of voice and acting at Arizona State University.

Espinosa will also teach acting.
