Three chances to see pianist Dowling over the next few days

Richard Dowling

Pianist Richard Dowling will be in Juneau this week to perform a solo piano concert on Friday, July 12, and Saturday, July 13, featuring the music of Chopin, Joplin, Gershwin and others. He’ll also perform at the Gold Town Nickelodeon on July 16, as part of their Not-So-Silent Film Series.

Dowling was last in town in May as a guest artist for the 27th annual Juneau Jazz & Classics Festival. He has performed all over the world, from China to South Africa, and throughout the United States, and has appeared on PBS and NPR, among other media outlets.

Dowling’s solo piano concerts will be held Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Northern Light United Church. A reception will follow both concerts. Tickets are available at Hearthside Books, the JACC, online at, and at the door. Adult admission is $25, seniors are $20 and students are $10. Audience members are encouraged to bring a donation of canned food as well.

On Tuesday, Dowling will perform at the Gold Town, where he will provide an original musical score for two back-to-back Harold Lloyd silent comedies: “Girl Shy” and Safety Last.” The performance is one night only, Tuesday, July 16. “Girl Shy” begins at 7 p.m., and “Safety Last” at 9 p.m. Tickets are limited, and on sale now at Rainy Retreat Books and online at

This will be Dowling’s second appearance at the Gold Town. The first was in May, when he accompanied the initial screening of “Safety Last.” He was inspired to participate in the Not-So-Silent series by a friend who does something similar at a theater in San Francisco.

In addition to his regular concert performances, Dowling performs as a member of the artist roster of The Piatigorsky Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing live classical music to audiences across America.

Between concert tours Dowling divides his time between New York and Houston.
