Hearthside Books will host a book-signing with local author Marcy L. Peska, at the downtown Hearthside Books on Tuesday, July 23, from noon to 2 p.m. Peska recently released her debut novel “Magic All Around” in paperback.
“Magic All Around,” a contemporary fantasy written for adults and teens, is set in Juneau, where Peska has lived on and off since she was an infant.
Peska spent much of her childhood living on boats and in float houses. Her first book, a short memoir called “Head Buckets & Hashtags: An Alaskan Childhood In Tweets,” shares some of the stories from that part of her life. In an interview with the blog Wise Ink, Peska said the book was unintentional at first, developing out of a daily tweeting habit.
“I started out tweeting factoids, sharing details about Alaska and opening a small window for others to catch a glimpse of this splendid place,” she said in the Wise Ink interview. “My factoids gradually gave way to reminiscing about some of the more exotic elements of my childhood.”
Peska also lived in the remote community of Edna Bay for nine years, before returning to Juneau permanently in 1991.
Her new book, released earlier this spring, centers on the character of Vivian Marshall, an introverted Juneau artist who becomes involved in the fulfillment of a prophecy. Readers can read the first chapter online on Peska’s blog, mpeska.blogspot.com. The book is also available at Hearthside and through Amazon.
