Dr. Byron McGilvray and pianist Janis Capelle are headed back to Juneau to lead the annual Mid-summer Festival Chorus and Workshop, sponsored by the Juneau Lyric Opera. The workshop begins July 29 and runs through Aug. 10, with the Festival Chorus performance scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10, at Northern Light United Church.
The chorus will perform two major works: “Lux Aeterna” by Morten Lauridsen and “Gloria” by Antonio Vivaldi. “Lux Aeterna” is a 25-minute work in five movements set to various Latin texts about light. Laurdisen composed the piece in response to his mother’s final illness and writes he “found great personal comfort and solace in setting to music these timeless and wondrous words about Light, a universal symbol of illumination at all levels – spiritual, artistic and intellectual.”
Vivaldi’s “Gloria,” a hymn of praise and worship, is part of the Roman Catholic Mass. Divided into 12 relatively brief movements, the piece has contrasting moods, musical textures and instrumental and vocal color.
Workshop rehearsals will be held from 7-9:30 p.m. July 29-Aug. 10 at Northern Light United Church. Singers will meet each weekday evening until the Aug. 10 concert. Workshop tuition is $95 per person. Scholarships are available.
