Bailey and Downes to present "Made in America"

Juneau Jazz & Classics will host cellist Zuill Bailey and pianist Lara Downes this Sunday, Sept. 1, in a combined performance focusing on American composers. “Made in America” will be presented one time only, at 7:30 p.m. at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center.

Featured composers include Samuel Barber, Dave Brubeck, Leonard Bernstein and Lukas Foss.

Highly acclaimed cellist Bailey, who performs all over the world, has been performing in Southeast Alaska since 2007, when he was asked to be part of the Sitka Summer Music Festival. He is now the artistic director of the festival, a position he inherited from Juneau’s Paul Rosenthal. Bailey’s most recent local performance was September 2012, when he performed the complete Bach Suites for Unaccompanied Cello in two sold out shows. His performances ended up on more than one local’s list of the top five arts events of the year, as published in the Juneau Empire.

Playing with Bailey will be pianist Downes, an active solo and chamber music performer and artist in residence at UC Davis. Like Bailey, Downes has performed all over the world, including at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Critics have praised her “magnificent, gutsy” performances (Sacramento Bee) and “unique blend of musicianship and showmanship” (NPR). She has performed with Bailey in the past, and also performs solo.

The evening will include complimentary refreshments and a no-host bar. Tickets are $50 for adults, $25 for students and $10 for K-12 students. The event will benefit Juneau Jazz & Classics.

The concert is sponsored by Duane Callahan in memory of Myra E. Howe, a long-time supporter of Juneau Jazz & Classics; and the Alaskan Brewing Co., KRNN, KXLL, KTOO, the Juneau Radio Center, the Juneau Empire and the Prospector Hotel.
