Juneau Jazz & Classics will present Western swing and jazz band The Hot Club of Cowtown on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 at Centennial Hall.
The Austin-based band -- comprised of fiddle-player Elana James, guitarist Whit Smith and bassist Jake Erwin -- formed in 1998 when James responded to an ad placed by Smith in New York’s Village Voice. Their name is a blend of several sources that reflect their influences: “Hot Club” from jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli’s Hot Club of France, and “Cowtown” from the Western swing influence of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys.
“We’re playing what knocked us out about Western swing in the first place — the early fiery energy and jazzy improvisations,” James said in a release.
The trio has made several visits to Juneau in the past, including in 2004 when they were the featured guest artists at the 30th annual Alaska Folk Festival, and in 2012, when they were hosted by Juneau Jazz & Classics.
Tickets for the show are available at jazzandclassics.org, Hearthside Books, the JACC and at the door.
