A series of Artist in the School Teacher Workshops will be held Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Glacier Valley Elementary School. The workshops are open to all teachers in the Juneau School District, and are designed to integrate arts across the K-12 school curriculum.
Each session will be taught by a Teaching Artist who is doing an Artists in the School residency in a Juneau school this year. Each artist will share arts activities tailored for those in attendance, and leave participants with lesson ideas and curriculum suggestions for extending what occurs in the workshop. Though the workshops are tailored for teachers, administrative staff and others affiliated with the schools that are interested are welcome to register.
Teachers have the option of taking the workshops as an ED S593 UAS Course. UAS Course registrations will be handed out at the Oct. 19 workshop at Glacier Valley.
The following workshops will be offered:
• “Puppetry in the Classroom: Integrating Learning & Play” with Ryan Conarro;
• “Fun drawing exercises to enhance science study” with Kathy Hocker;
• “Charcoal Drawing and Message in Art” with MK MacNaughton;
• “Write On!” with Shona Strauser.
Tea, coffee and simple refreshments will be provided, but participants should plan to bring their own lunch.
The program is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Alaska State Council on the Arts, and administered by Juneau Arts & Humanities Council in collaboration with the Juneau School District. Subsequent workshops will be offered in January and March.
