Juneau Student Symphony to present fall concert

Posted: November 7, 2013 - 12:04am

The Juneau Student Symphony will present their fall concert, Russian Romantics, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, under the direction of their new conductor, Tyree Pini. Pini, the music teacher at Thunder Mountain High School, took over for Rick Trostel at the end of the summer, following Trostel’s move to Portland, Ore.

Pini will lead more than 40 musicians of all ages and experience levels in performing Russian favorites such as Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain,” Rachmaninov’s “Vocalise” and the finale of Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony.

Friday’s concert will be held at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center, and Saturday’s will be at the Thunder Mountain High School Auditorium. Both shows begin at 7 p.m. and are pay-as-you-can at the door.

The Juneau Student Symphony, founded in the 1908s, is the educational arm of the Juneau Symphony. Under Trostel’s baton, it expanded from a youth organization to an all-ages group. Previous conductors in addition to Trostel and Pini include Fred Mayer, Julia Bastuscheck and Patrick Murphy.

This event is sponsored by the City and Borough of Juneau and the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council.
